April was all about Rosacea Awareness

Updated: Aug 3, 2019

Did you know Women are three more times likely to suffer from Rosacea than men, the NHS estimates approximately 1 in every 600 people are diagnosed with Rosacea each year in the UK. Rosacea is most often seen in fair skinned people between the ages of 30 and 50 and it typically affects the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin.

Exposure to sunlight can cause increased flare ups of Rosacea symptoms such as redness and flushing. According to a 2014 study by The National Rosacea Society, 88% of Rosacea patients reported decrease in these symptoms when wearing an SPF daily, it’s extremely important to use a sunscreen daily to help manage your Rosacea as UV radiation is one of the common triggers for this skin condition, ideally an SPF of 30 or more should be worn that provides Broad Spectrum that’s UVA & UVB protection. By choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen with zinc oxide & titanium dioxide, are generally less irritating than a chemical sunscreen and also a broad spectrum keeps the skin cooler by reflecting the UV rays which is very important for sensitive & Rosacea prone skin.

What else can I avoid? Apart from the sun, avoid Dairy such as yogurt and cheese. Soy Sauce Aubergines, avocados, spinach Sorry to say Chocolate 😭 Alcohol Yeast extracts Hot baths and hot showers Extreme heat changes Dyes and parabens Perfumed soap, perfumed facial products Citrus fruits, including tomatoes, bananas, red plums, raisins and figs High impact exercise, go for low impact or water aerobics if your Rosacea is bothered by your heat. Try walking early or late definitely not midday and definitely not when the sun is hot. Yoga is a perfect exercise it’s low impact it’s really good for you in so many ways, Yoga can help reduce your stress levels which is just what a suffer needs as Rosacea causes emotional upset resulting in stress that can make Rosacea worse, a vicious cycle 😢
